After the aspen change in the high country, it is time for the cottonwoods of the lower stream valleys.  In the desert southwest, cottonwoods are important signals; they tell where the water is.  Autumn brings out their striking yellow colors along Escalante Creek in the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area of western Colorado.
