About the Award-Winning Artist, George Callison

A Representational Painter

He notes, “I love the power of a high mountain storm, the mystery of reflections, the anticipation of adventure, the play of sun and shadow, the excitement of discovery, the patina of history, the enigma of clouds, and the surprise of color.”

George, who now lives in western Colorado, is native to Blue Rapids, Kansas where, from his hunting and gathering parents, he learned to appreciate land and life and to see nature deeply. Such interest in nature led him to a career in biological sciences specializing in comparative anatomy and vertebrate paleontology –both very dependent upon visual detection of patterns, field exploration, and discovery.
Now, he has built upon these skills and enthusiasms and turned to a related passion, art.

In his representational oil and watercolor paintings he emphasizes the wildness of mountains, mesas, and canyons of the American West. Although he usually paints landscapes, frequently animals or human figures are integrated into them. Occasionally, he paints portraits. George studied drawing with Dr. Betty Edwards (author of "Drawing From the Right Side of the Brain") and aspires to the virtuosity of a painterly style such as that expressed by many painters including Maynard Dixon, Edgar Payne, Emile Gruppé, and John Singer Sargent. He encourages commissions.
